Questions from Quora: Got No Job

What should I do to make a living? I’m a male aged 27, got no job, and I have a kid. The kid stays with her mother and I stay at my parents’ home.

How is it that you are 27 and you “got no” job? Do you mean you never have worked to support yourself since you were 18?

First of all, go back to school. Get an education, that is never a waste of time. (While you are at it, get some parenting classes so you can be a good father to your daughter).

Do some reflection. What kinds of things do you like to do? What kinds of things are you good at? Get some training in those areas.

Be prepared to start at the bottom. You will not be able to get a management position to begin with. You will need to get an entry-level position with terrible hours until you prove yourself and earn the right to get something better. Your age has nothing to do with it, your abilities and dedication do.

Learn how to write a resume.

Get out of your comfort zone and walk the streets from one business to the next, filling out applications. Yes, these days, many, or even most jobs are filled online, but most of those are for people who have experience in that field. Jobs are still filled face to face. Do both.

When you get an interview, and they ask why you want the job, don’t say “because I need a job”, that’s pretty obvious. Do your homework, learn about the company you are applying to, and then decide how you will be able to help them. Then tell them that when that question comes up.

After the interview, send them a thank you by mail or email. Manners matter.

For both the interview and the first few days on the job, clean up and dress appropriately. Once you are there for a while, you can dress more like the other employees.

And then always be on time, work hard, and never call in sick just because you don’t feel like getting out of bed. Your job can always be taken away from you. They do owe you a living wage, and you owe them a good day’s work.
