When I was a kid, summer meant root beer floats. One summer my dad decided to make it all from scratch; homemade ice cream and homemade root beer. We all helped mixing up the root beer and putting into bottles. The bottles were then stored in the basement where it was thought to be cooler. I didn’t matter. A few days later we heard a pop, pop, pop. The bottles had exploded and we had fizzy root beer everywhere. My mother was not pleased. We bagged the homemade ice cream and headed for the store to buy bottles of root beer and Lucerne vanilla ice cream.
I continued this tradition with my own children and had a specific menu to go with it and make it a special event.
